HISTORY

DAUGĖLIŠKIS SCHOOL

XIV century -  a little town of Daugėliškis (old) was built near the castle and manor.

1526 - The church with a school near it were built.

1774 -1802 - The school began functioning again after a long break.

1781 - 8 pupils learnt in it.

1867 - Russian people‘s (three classes) school was opened in Daugėliškis (old).

1910, May 3 - Russian tsar signed a decree, that allowed to teach Lithuanian as a school subject at schools of the Western Empire’s provinces.

1912 - A masonry school was built (three rooms for classes and several utility rooms).

1915 – At the end of September German Army occupied New Daugėliškis. A war hospital was established in the school (the school did not function during the World War I).

1918 – In autumn the Germans retreated from Vilnius land. They also retreated from New Daugėliškis, leaving a devastated school. A teacher Veronika Matkevičiūtė from New Daugėliškis opened a Lithuanian school in one of the least devastated classes. She taught (without any payment) all three classes together.

1918/1919 - The school did not function until the end of the school year.

1919/1920 - New Daugėliškis Lithuanian people’s school even three times changed premises; teachers changed too.

1920/1921 -  Švenčionys Lithuanian Educational Society School “Rytas“ (Morning) was established in the house of the Jewish man Judelis (the building remained). The teacher was Sofija Statkauskaitė from Linkmenys village, who had graduated from Vilnius Pedagogical Courses (Teachers‘ Seminary). The teacher taught all three classes – 84 pupils together.

1921/1922 - 142 pupils learnt in the school. The teachers were Sofija Stakauskaitė, Janina Rimšelytė and Antanas Paukštė.

1922 - The masonry school was renovated for the 1st of September.

1922 - A Polish teacher arrived in New Daugėliškis and a Polish school was opened on the 1st September. Both Polish and Lithuanian “Rytas” schools functioned in the same school building.

1933 - There was established a reading-room by Švenčionys Educational Society “Rytas“ in New Daugėliškis in the summer.

1941 – 1944 - The teaching language was Lithuanian in New Daugėliškis school.

1944 – May 27, when the front got nearer (the explosions were heard even during the day in the front), the soviet partisans “attacked” New Daugėliškis, although there were neither rural district nor the police since May 19, 1944. They burnt the former Jewish houses, the buildings of rural district, school and dairy. Local people were surprised and disgusted by this “feat” of soviet partisans. The burnt buildings were not strategic objects, in addition, their own authorities needed the same buildings after a few months.

1944 – October 1 – 1951 summer - New Daugėliškis school again had to function in the Jewish houses.
